Christmas with the In-Laws

This was the first Christmas that I have spent without my family. Instead, we drove down the coast to spend the holidays with my new in-laws. We drove through about 100 miles of fog which slowed our progress. There was a soft glow around each car on the road due to the interaction between car lights and fog - it was really pretty. Each time we emerged from the fog, my DH would drive like a mad man to make up for lost time. We actually ended up arriving around the time we had estimated without the fog. :)

Went to see a local production of The Nutcracker. There were SO many little kids in the production! I have never seen so many little ballet dancers on stage with a professional ensemble. It really made me appreciate the Boston Ballet version. heehee.

Christmas was a quiet luncheon with extended family members. During lunch, the guy cousins were watching basketball...which went into overtime. ugh.

Anyway, it was a hazy lazy vacation - DH and brother did a lot of piano playing, we all got a lot of home cooking, I made good progress with a novel ("The Lovely Bones") that I had brought, and we all enjoyed opening presents. We also watched the movies Hero (very beautifully made) and The Grifters (did not understand the point of it).

The trip back up the coast was LONG, a total of 8 hours. Due to the bad weather that suddenly materialized after the weekend, there was an accident on the highway that we were to take. A road sign showed us that it was an expected 2 hour delay if we took that highway. Therefore, we took the detour which adds another 100 miles to the trip. We drove through some heavy rain but thankfully there were not many cars on the alternate route which made it a little safer.

Vacation away from home is so calming...but when you get back home, all the little things you forgot to worry about on vacation come back to you. boooooo...although on the bright side, we received some awesome Christmas cards while we were gone! :)

Flakiness

The stingy company that I work for does not organize holiday parties for our group. So the boss's boss, a week ago, schedules a holiday lunch for us today. WELL, too good to be true! Due to important meetings and lack of restaurant suggestions (2 out of 6 did reply with suggestions - lame excuse), the lunch has been postponed to Monday.

GRRRRR - I could've brought a LUNCH but now i have to buy lunch. *sigh*

On a happier note, I got new athletic shoes with arch supports! :) Currently breaking them in. Yay!

Some meat?

Back about 7 months ago, on our trip in Italy, I hurt my right foot when trekking around Rome. Well, I finally made an appointment with a local podiatrist to see what was going on since any physical activity (even a friendly game of tennis) would cause my foot to hurt the next day.

So you'd think that it was something wrong with the right foot? Well, it is...and it isn't. Apparenlty, my left foot is more flat such that my right foot has injured itself compensating for that. SHEESH!

Now I get to wear this little makeshift cast thing for the next few days. AND I need to get new athletic shoes and inserts. But no more high impact aerobics until the doctor allows it. grr.

When you start growing up, you're not invincible anymore...

Expensive drink

What would it be like to be able to drop ten grand on a martini?
