Christmas with the In-Laws
This was the first Christmas that I have spent without my family. Instead, we drove down the coast to spend the holidays with my new in-laws. We drove through about 100 miles of fog which slowed our progress. There was a soft glow around each car on the road due to the interaction between car lights and fog - it was really pretty. Each time we emerged from the fog, my DH would drive like a mad man to make up for lost time. We actually ended up arriving around the time we had estimated without the fog. :)
Went to see a local production of The Nutcracker. There were SO many little kids in the production! I have never seen so many little ballet dancers on stage with a professional ensemble. It really made me appreciate the Boston Ballet version. heehee.
Christmas was a quiet luncheon with extended family members. During lunch, the guy cousins were watching basketball...which went into overtime. ugh.
Anyway, it was a hazy lazy vacation - DH and brother did a lot of piano playing, we all got a lot of home cooking, I made good progress with a novel ("The Lovely Bones") that I had brought, and we all enjoyed opening presents. We also watched the movies Hero (very beautifully made) and The Grifters (did not understand the point of it).
The trip back up the coast was LONG, a total of 8 hours. Due to the bad weather that suddenly materialized after the weekend, there was an accident on the highway that we were to take. A road sign showed us that it was an expected 2 hour delay if we took that highway. Therefore, we took the detour which adds another 100 miles to the trip. We drove through some heavy rain but thankfully there were not many cars on the alternate route which made it a little safer.
Vacation away from home is so calming...but when you get back home, all the little things you forgot to worry about on vacation come back to you. boooooo...although on the bright side, we received some awesome Christmas cards while we were gone! :)
